A STORY IN PICTURES

Injured adult and orphaned baby opossums are a common sight at Red Creek Wildlife Center -- and we have rehabilitated close to a thousand opossums over our 20 years. In those many years, however, this was the first time we rehabilitated a mother opossum that had growing babies in her pouch.

An auto accident left this female opossum with a fractured jaw. While being treated at Berks Veterinary Services in Fleetwood, she gave birth to thirteen babies who began growing up in her pouch. We cared for her injuries while she cared for her young.

After her jaw healed and the babies were old enough to fend for themselves, they were released back to the wild together.

Ever hear the phrase: "You had to be there?"
